Oliver McGowan Tier 1 Training Course - Curve Learning

A Landmark in Health and Social Care Training

The Oliver McGowan Tier 1 Training is a 1 hour training course about understanding the people receiving care and developing skills so staff can feel confident when interacting, and supporting people with learning disabilities or autism.

This course is far more than just a compliance requirement, it helps build confidence, skills and helps organisations upskill individuals and teams.

The quality of care your health and social care organisation delivers every day is important, The Oliver McGowan Tier 1 Training is designed to provide awareness, focus and understanding to deliver high quality care for people.

Who Is Oliver McGowan?

Oliver McGowan was a young autistic teenager with a mild learning disability who tragically passed away in 2016 following a severe reaction to medication that he and his family had specifically asked for him not to receive. His death shone a stark light on a critical gap in the health and social care system: too many staff lacked the knowledge, autism awareness, and learning disabilities awareness needed to properly understand and support the people in their care.

This led to a big change in this nationwide training programme named in Oliver’s memory to improve the standards and awareness of training in health and social care settings.

What is Tier 1 Training?

The Oliver Mcgowan Tier 1 Training course is a structured 1 hour introductory level course for all staff regardless of role. This webinar training course with Curve Learning is designed for staff who require awareness of autism, and learning disabilities.

Every member of your team needs to develop awareness and understanding needed to treat people with learning disabilities or autism with more confidence and support during interaction.

Not only can health and social care teams benefit from this training but it is also relevant for admin and reception staff, porters, catering staff, facility teams, HR teams and any member of staff who may interact with people with learning disabilities or autism.

The course covers awareness of how autism and learning disabilities are presented differently in different people, and why a one style only approach simply doesn’t work. Training involves understanding the basics of learning disabilities and autism too.

Person Centred Care

Person-centred care is covered too, which recognises the importance of how every individual has unique needs and preferences.

Reasonable Adjustments

The course involves learning about knowing what reasonable adjustments look like in practice and feeling confident in making these adjustments to support individuals.

Communication and Understanding

Developing effective communication techniques to communicate more effectively and understanding the different communication styles and sensory needs is important for any staff member. This is covered in the 1 hour course.

Reflection of Real Life Experiences

Reflecting on real-life experiences and perspectives are one of the most influential elements of the Oliver McGowan Tier 1 Training course. By hearing directly from people with lived experience, this brings real world insight to the learning, emphasising more genuine reflection and empathy.

Epilepsy Awareness is Part Of The Understanding

This Tier 1 Training course is even more effective when paired with epilepsy awareness training to build a more complete understanding or the people staff support. Epilepsy can often be overlooked, it’s too important not to be overlooked. Epilepsy is significantly more common in autistic people and those with learning disabilities than in the wider population which means that it is closely connected to the topics covered in the Oliver McGowan Tier 1 Training.
